Physio Ulverston, Persistent injuries Ulverston

Your First Appointment

Addressing your pain and injury to get you back to living life to the full starts with your first appointment, known as your physio initial assessment.

Typically, it takes an hour during which time Michael will listen to your story and ask specific questions to reach an understanding of your problem and a diagnosis.

You may be coming with a persistent pain or injury, a long-term recurring condition, or to settle down a new complaint that’s just occurred.

Whatever your problem, Michael’s skill is to be able to advise on the most effective treatment plan to get you feeling well and strong again.

He will want to know how your pain is restricting or preventing you from carrying out your daily and sporting activities and will ask you to set your real-life goals. This can be anything from walking a flight of stairs pain free; doing the gardening; playing with your grandchildren or improving your performance in your next sporting event.

What will happen during the hour
Take a history of your problem and a physical examination

Michael will listen to how your problem started and ask about your previous injuries as these may be contributing to your current pain. He will do a physical examination looking at your range of movement and strength of individual muscles and will want to know how your current issue is restricting you in your life.

Explain the problem in a way that makes sense to you

He will then explain in simple terms where the pain is coming from, what the causes are, and why it is not settling down. You will be able to ask questions to fully understand what's going on.

Hands on treatment for immediate symptom relief

If pain relief is your priority, you will be offered hands-on treatment and advice to make you more comfortable, improve your range of movement and help speed up healing. Hands-on treatment will vary depending on your presentation and may involve gentle or deep massage and/or manipulation.

Setting your goals and making a treatment plan

With a clear understanding of what your problem is, Michael will ask you to set your own goals - usually the activities you want to be doing but without pain. These may even be the activities that have triggered your pain in the first place, such as walking, running, housework, DIY and gardening. You will be offered a detailed step by step treatment plan with definitive milestones designed to achieve your goals. You will also be advised on the number of treatment sessions needed over what timescale.

Advice and exercises for continued success

You will be provided with expert advice and/or specific exercises to do at home. This will enable you to make continuous improvement should you require a follow up session.
