Michael Otto has been a practising physiotherapist for 16 years.
He is here to enable you to be the fittest, healthiest, strongest person you can be, making you less reliant on medication or repeat treatments that have been ineffective in providing lasting relief in the past.
From his clinic on the first floor of Appleseeds Health Store in Ulverston, he will empower you to recover and perform at your best and stay there!
Michael is fascinated by the mechanics of the human body and is especially driven to understand why some of us are more prone to injury and pain than others. He keeps up to date with the latest thinking and techniques in physiotherapy through the professional mentorship of a leading UK sports physio.
He has completed extensive post-graduate training in areas such as orthopaedic medicine, injury-based strength and conditioning, APPI Pilates teaching, Acupuncture, massage, and pain psychology. He has also studied Chi Walking, Alexander Technique and Cognitive Functional Therapy.
He is also trained by renowned physio Tom Groom in the treatment of running injuries and knee specialist Claire Robinson.
Michael uses his knowledge, experience and skills to provide what he believes to be cutting-edge holistic rehabilitation and sports physiotherapy.
One of Michael’s earliest memories is of his grandmother saying he had natural healing hands. From a young age he took on the role of family ‘masseur’ and she predicted that one day he’d become a talented physiotherapist.
It seemed like a long shot for a schoolboy who was struggling with severe dyslexia, but thanks to the support of others and his own determination, Michael successfully completed a bio-medical degree at Manchester University and then trained as a physio.
As a post-graduate he took his first job 16 years ago as a junior physiotherapist in the NHS helping amputees and orthopaedic post-surgery patients begin their long journey through rehab. He then moved into private practice specialising in the treatment of patients with persistent pain as a result of road traffic accidents.
As time went on, he found himself struggling to diagnose complex spinal presentations and decided to return to the NHS as a Senior Musculoskeletal specialist in order to develop and fine tune his diagnostic skills. In 2024, he then opted to return to private practice running his own clinic to give patients the time and attention they deserved and allow them to experience the full potential of everything good physio has to offer.
Michael firmly believes that his ongoing experience of living with severe dyslexia has given him a resilience and resolve that makes him more effective as a physiotherapist. He may find reading, writing and technology challenging, but he has a unique and innate ability to visualise problems and think laterally when seeking solutions. He will use this to understand your situation and help you find the missing parts of the puzzle on your road to recovery.
Michael understands how we each have our own unique experience of pain. As well as hearing your story and asking about your own life circumstances, he will use his in-depth knowledge of posture, movement, muscle imbalances and pain psychology to offer you the right treatment, at the right time, and in the right amount, getting you back to the activities you enjoy the most.
